Lewis Avenue is the 2006 Greenest Block in Brooklyn!

Our block of Lewis Avenue between Decatur and MacDonough Sts. came in 1st place in the commercial category.

What’s more, Bedford-Stuyvesant had more winners than any other neighborhood in Brooklyn. Kudos to all including:

MacDonough (Stuyvesant and Lewis) - 3rd Place Residential
Stuyvesant (Putnam and Jefferson) - 4th Place Residential
Bainbridge (Malcolm X and Stuyvesant) - Honorable Mention - Residential

95 Bainbridge (Stuyvesant and Lewis) - 1st Place Window Box
257 Bainbridge (Malcolm X and Stuyvesant) - 1st Place BBG Window Box

The following stores on Tompkins Avenue also received commendations:

BED STUY GREENMARKET - Now thru November!

The Bed Stuy Greenmarket has moved to a new location! Several small, family farmers are selling local fruits and vegetables on Lewis Ave btw Decatur & Mac Donough, Saturdays, 8-5pm. Shop at Alex’s Tomato Farm, Nolasco Farm and Gonzalez Farm for your tomatoes, eggplant, broccoli, peppers, summer squash,
lettuce, cooking greens, herbs and more! Farmers accept EBT/Food Stamps; WIC & Senior FMNP coupons.

This summer also marks Greenmarket’s 30th birthday. Greenmarket opened their first farmers market on July 17th, 1976, in a parking lot near Bloomingdales’ later the now-famous market at Union Square began. Today the 200 local farmers and food producers who sell their homegrown foods through Greenmarket and preserve over 30,000 acres of local farmland and open space.

Your support not only helps their efforts but contributes to the growth of our local economy and improves our quality of life here in Bedford-Stuyvesant. So spend a little time this and every Saturday on Lewis Avenue chatting with your neighbors while you stock your kitchen with fresh, healthy produce!
